DIXON — Welcome to winter in Western Montana all. It’s been a long time since we’ve had temps like the past week but the roads are clear (except to get to the highway) and we know how to layer up by now. My winter birds have begun to appear, like a downy woodpecker and a stellar jay and frisky bunnies are hopping all over my yard. Life goes on.

A happy event occurred recently when I changed my name to Mrs. Hank Jenkins...Martha Cole Jenkins to be exact. I married my high school sweetheart, whom I’ve known for 59 years, so I’m not expecting any great surprises. We grew up in SE Alaska, so he’s been through cold and my cats have accepted him, so it should be a “go.” We will stay in the Dixon area for the winter at least. You cannot imagine all the issues to go through in order to change your name.

This was a very special time, as my 94 year old mother, two sisters, two children and three grandchildren were all able to be at the wedding, which my self-appointed wedding planners (sisters Betty and Sally), turned into a lovely, sentimental event.

Something else happening this month will be our annual Christmas Party following the noon meal on Thursday, Dec. 19, at about 1 p.m. This is always much fun, so plan to join us. Bring a wrapped gift, marked “man,” “woman” or “either” for a gift exchange. One fellow always brings something “he wants” and usually ends up getting it back.

Our remaining senior in her 90’s, Betty Wetzel, said with her lovely and cheerful smile, “It takes me longer to get in and out of a car than it does to walk it,” when I stopped to offer her a ride the other day. She lives about a block from the center and walks it back and forth twice a week, no matter the weather.

Our meals are served at noon on Thursdays and at 5 p.m. each Monday and are still only $4. Stop in for some delicious food and friendly people to visit with. Bingo is played at 1:30 p.m. on Monday afternoons. Come take a ride in the country and join in the fellowship.

Meals for December will be:

•  Thursday, Dec. 12:  brunch - French toast, bacon/quiche

•  Monday, Dec. 16: potpie

•  Thursday, Dec. 19: pork chops

•  Monday, Dec. 23: turkey

•  Thursday, Dec. 26: meatloaf

•  Monday, Dec. 30: ham

There’s so much going on that can perk us up; invite someone to go with you or to take you. It’s impressive what local people are doing as you see in the arts and craft shows, the school programs, community events.

Continue to be thankful as you help others.
