The 75 teams competing in the Pioneer Days 3-on-3 “Jam”boree were too swift to let a little rain ruin their day.

As soon as Shocker Squad (men’s open), Give and Go (men’s 6’1” and under) and Desert Horse Rain (coed) won their championships at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to wrap up nearly eight-and-a-half hours of basketball, rain and hail started to pour down on the 15 courts painted on the Ronan High School and Event Center parking lots.

One of the main reasons for the brisk pace of this year’s competition was because for the first time since the inaugural year 15 or 16 years ago – where all teams played on Main Street – the 3-on-3 tournament was confined to one area instead of spread out throughout Ronan.

“It was way different,” said Steve Woll, one of the tournament’s organizers.

“It was more confined. There was more of a basketball atmosphere,” said Woll, who was hoping to reach triple digits in team participation, “Everyone was on the same page ... Everything ran way more smoothly.”

The 75 teams were split into 14 divisions and played on 11 courts in the two parking lots. The “Jam”boree also had a free throw, 3-point and slam dunk contest around the midway point.

Payton Lefthand won the boy’s 3-8 free throw contest. Ronan’s David Edmo won the men’s 9-adult contest by making one free throw.

“I thought at least somebody else would make one. I was surprised. “ Edmo said. “That was an easy win.”

Pablo’s Kollin Wroblewski made 3-of-5 3-pointers to win the men’s competition. Ronan’s Daryl Conko-Camel matched Wroblewski to win the women’s contest. Ryan Ovitt won the 6-foot dunk contest. Arlee’s Trae Burland won the 8-foot contest and former Bulldog Jorren Gies won the 9-foot contest.
