POLSON – The Lady Pirates are struggling to find themselves on the court, but not without conviction. While still searching for that magic W, first year Head Coach Jay Krantz is positive that things will turn around.

“We have very little varsity experience,” he said. “But we’ve been improving since Christmas.”

On Friday the Lady Pirates dropped a game to Ronan, 30-41. After falling behind by 10 in the first quarter, the Lady Pirates came back to stay close in the next three, but it wasn’t quite enough to garner the win.

“We played well defensively,” Krantz said. “We’re just missing shots and still looking for someone to score.”

Lady Pirate senior Shelbi Mallon top scored her team with eight while sophomore Nichole Lake netted seven.

Coach Krantz remains cool about the early season struggles but emphasizes they are working on getting better overall.

“We need to push the tempo up,” he said. “With full court pressure and making those shots, we’re having a tough time.”

Although Krantz is looking for leaders to step up, he is seeing senior Jessica Bagnell beginning to fill that role.

“She’s coming around and showing her leadership,” Krantz said.

Bagnell also had some wise words for her team.

“It’s chaos sometimes but we’re gradually getting better,” she said. “We work hard but we need to start playing together as a team.”

Krantz is optimistic about the Lady Pirates’ future and maintains they’re working hard and have postseason goals.

“We will get better,” he said. “We don’t need to be better now, but need to be better come the end of the season.”

The Lady Pirates will continue their fight on the road, heading to Columbia Falls Jan. 10 and then on to Corvallis Jan. 14.
