ARLEE – The Scarlets are on the hunt with wins in their scopes and have been mounting W’s with each game. After falling in their first two games, the Scarlets have put that in the past and moved on to more important business – a winning record.

First year Head Coach Bill Stockton is seeing momentum on his bench. “We’re doing really good,” he said. “We lost our first two but have come back to win our last five out of six.”

Three of those wins came last week as the Scarlets were on a scalding hot tear. On Tuesday the Scarlets hosted Noxon and after a 35-3 lead in the first half were unstoppable finishing with a 59-13 win. Whitney Malatare and Alicia Camel each put up 11 points followed by Alexis Shick adding 10.

At home on Friday the Scarlets punched a win, overtaking St. Regis 65-54. Alicia Camel led her team with 21 points and nine rebounds. Whitney Malatare chipped in 14 points.

Saturday the Scarlets took to Mission’s court with Arlee easily defeating the Lady Bulldogs 57-26. Seniors Alexis Shick and Whitney Malatare combined to net 24 points. Shick hoisted 13 and Malatare came away with 11, bringing the Scarlets to 5-3 on the season.

With only two seniors and one junior starting, the Scarlets have been bringing up JV players as relief, but that doesn’t seem to hinder the young club.

“We have experience to learn from,” Stockton said. That experience is coming from the Scarlets’ two seniors. Whitney Malatare and Alexis Shick both have played varsity basketball all four years of their high school careers.

“They know what it takes to play at the next level,” Stockton said. “The younger players look up to them.”

The Scarlets hope to continue their fury, traveling to Charlo on Friday, Jan. 17 and then hosting Two Eagle River’s Lady Eagles Saturday, Jan. 18.
