There’s a well-kept secret that Hollywood stars have used in the past decade to keep their skin taut and young looking. That little secret now has a name, and it’s available right in Ronan.

It’s not surgery, and it’s not Botox.

It’s microcurrent facial sculpting, a non-surgical alternative to facial cosmetic surgery, and it’s offered by local cosmetologist Marie Noble at Reflections Salon.

Marie has been a hairdresser since 1981. One year ago she became certified to provide Flair microcurrent facial sculpting.

“My clients say they love the results,” Noble said. “It’s actually very relaxing. People fall asleep (during the process).”

Microcurrent treatment is facial massage using small wands that emit a painless, low-level electric current which mimics the body’s own electrical system. As a person ages, their body’s electrical system becomes more sluggish, Noble explained, and cells don’t turn around as quickly as they did during youth. Also, elastin fibers in the face atrophy, causing sagging and dropping.

Microcurrent sculpting is like recharging a body’s electrical system to boost everything back up again.

The cumulative treatment works at the cellular level to stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, while reducing circles and puffiness under the eyes. In addition, the treatments visibly contour the skin, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, reduce sagging jowls and double chins, and yield a youthful glow. As a result of treatments, collagen is boosted and elastin increases.

The treatment is completely safe, non-invasive, and there are no harmful side effects. Initially, clients come in for a 45-minute session once a week for 10 weeks in a row, followed by treatments once per month to maintain muscle memory.

Although it sounds futuristic, electrical current therapy has been in use for more than 100 years by physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors to heal muscles and tissue quickly.

Forty years ago, a physician in Germany applied microcurrent to the face of a Bell’s Palsy patient. Over time, the patient’s face lifted. Microcurrent facials have since been used aesthetically in Europe for 40 years, but the treatment is only now becoming mainstream in America.

Now that Noble offers the treatment in Ronan, clients — including Virginia Dale — couldn’t be happier.

In her eighth session, Virginia said she could see results, including a tightening of skin.

“My skin looks healthier, and my neck has improved dramatically, with fewer wrinkles,” Virginia said. “I just think the world of Marie, so I would trust her with anything. She introduced me to microcurrent sculpting, because it’s a natural way of going forward with something that makes you look young.”

Dale said the treatment has exceeded all of her expectations.

“I am at the droopy stage, and I just marvel. It is a lovely experience, on top of it all. It’s a very nice place to escape to for a wee bit. It’s very relaxing, with soothing music, and Marie is so gentle and caring.”

Noble is loyal to the privacy of her clients. Although she takes a “before” picture when the client begins treatment, she tells clients the photo is only for their own use to see the results after 10 weeks.

Reflections Salon owner Marilyn Jette has kept up with microcurrent treatment for a while, and her beautiful skin is a walking testament to the treatment’s effectiveness.

“The muscles stay up where they’re supposed to be, around my eye and neck areas,” she said. “I will never do anything else.”

Keeping the youthful look to skin also requires some responsibility from the client, such as drinking plenty of water to keep skin hydrated and sticking with a cleansing and moisturizing routine at home.

“If you’re not drinking the water, you’re not supporting the treatment,” Marie said.

Results are also dependent on genetics, diet, and client cooperation; ten consecutive weeks are required to reach the treatment’s full potential. Microcurrent treatment is not recommended for pregnant women, people with pacemakers or metal plates, and individuals with heart disease, epilepsy, cancer or phlebitis.

Marie offers other skin care treatments at the salon such as deep exfoliation, sugaring for hair removal, an oxygenation treatment to remove dry skin, and a gentle, organic peel that doesn’t leave skin reddened.

Marie also offers a professional line of skin care products.
