With armfuls of crosses and flags, American Legion members, Boy Scouts from Troop 1947, scoutmasters and parents crisscrossed Lakeview Cemetery in Polson making sure the grave of each Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine, Navy service man or woman was marked.
It was a cool, misty Saturday morning, but the weather didn’t discourage anyone. To honor veterans, the graves needed to be decorated for families visiting over the weekend and during May 30 Memorial Day ceremonies.

Scoutmaster Doug Crosby said Troop 1947 Boy Scouts have been helping with flag duty for at least five years. Their sponsoring organizations are the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars so it’s a service project dear to the sponsors’ hearts.

American Legion member Gerry Roat has been putting out flags and crosses for about 18 to 20 years. He was joined on Saturday by fellow Legion members Jeff Nelson and Frank Stock.

Memorial Day was honored throughout Lake County with gravesite cermonies and parades.

Participants in Ronan’s Memorial Day parade marched down Main Street at 10 a.m., then hoofed it to Polson to take part in their noon celebration.

Following Polson’s parade, people wandered through the markers, crosses and flags at the Lakeview Cemetery.

Honor guards and special speakers rounded out the Polson Memorial Day services at the flag-encircled site.
