ARLEE — The Arlee Senior Center will celebrate Valentines Day with a Turkey dinner and all the trimmings, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the regular "Second Saturday Dinner." Dinner will be topped off with a red velvet cake and ice cream. There will be a bake sale held in conjunction with the dinner, with Valentine cakes, cookies, desserts, and candy available for purchase.

Three new board members were elected and two current board members were re-elected to the Arlee Senior Citizens’ Center Board of Directors, during a lively, fast-moving annual meeting at the Arlee center on Jan. 25.  New to the board are Marie Gillette, Rosie Ness, and Geraldine Gauthier. Returning for another term are Anne Stewart and Bob Hayes.

Drawings for numerous door prizes took place after the meeting. The following are individuals who enjoyed an extra bonus for attending the annual dinner meeting: Marie Gillette won a $40 certificate for dinner at the Buck Snort in Evaro; a $20 certificate from Wilson Grocery went to Delores Bryant; one $5 gift certificate, donated by the Hangin’ Art Gallery and Coffee Shop, went to both Don Stewart and Bette Samsel. One Honey Arlee Bea each went to Betty Younger and Bill Samsel; Lois Dumont, Deanie Gauthier and Vi Tanner each took home a box of chocolates; Dee McKnight, Rosie Ness, Pamela Gillette, and Harold Tanner each won a free $5 meal ticket for dinner at the Arlee Senior Center; Lori Adams and Don Grant each took home a decorated cloth shopping bag donated by Claire Marie Minez. A most heart-felt “thank you” from the board of directors, goes to everyone who participated in this meeting and dinner.  We look forward to a busy and enjoyable year in 2014.

Following the meeting, Ann Stewart gave a brief presentation and answered questions regarding a petition by the six senior citizens centers in Lake County, along with Area VI Office on Aging, and the Lake County Council on Aging, to place a small mill levy on the June ballot. This mill levy is vitally important for the continued functioning of the senior centers and the Council. The initial distribution for the centers was set in 1976 and since that date it has not been substantially raised to keep up with the increasing costs of providing the many services these centers and the council make available to senior citizens in Lake County. We are asking for help from all registered voters to sign a petition that will place this issue on the ballot in June. Petitions are available as near as your closest senior center, or talk with someone you know who is a senior center member. The petitions must be turned in to the County Commissioners’ office by March 5. Please sign the petition before March 5 and follow up with a vote for the mill levy in June.
