ST. IGNATIUS — Thirty-three Bulldogs had a musical send-off during graduation Sunday at St. Ignatius High School.

“Welcome to the free world,” said Tim Krantz, who delivered the graduation address. “One thing you’ve got to remember is, you’ve just got to keep on rocking in the free world,” he added before launching into a performance of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”

Krantz’s advice came as students officially began their lives’ journeys out of high school.

Or, as one of three valedictorians, Morgan Andres, put it: from the small fish tank of St. Ignatius High to the big ocean of the world. Remember, she told her classmates, every hero had to be potty-trained and learn how to tie shoes, she said. Success is a continual journey, she added.

Lessons students learned as Bulldogs and the spirit the school fostered will serve them well on their journeys, said salutatorian Sydney Allard.

“This isn’t any school spirit,” she said. “This is Bulldog spirit.”

Krantz, who graduated from and now teaches at St. Ignatius, taught students some of those lessons. During his speech, he showed students a slideshow of memorable moments in history since the graduates’ births and the lessons those moments taught.

In 1997, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter made it big. However, it took 12 publishers’ denials before one said yes.

“Be persistent in your goals and your dreams,” Krantz told students.

In 2004, Krantz taught the now senior class. “You made me a better teacher,” he praised them.

“And Martha Stewart taught us another lesson: Be square with everybody,” he added.

As the next portion of history’s slideshow is created, remember your roots, Krantz said.

“And know that this is just the beginning,” he added.

Dream big and know what you want, Krantz urged graduates, “And go out there and get it.”
