ST. IGNATIUS – Kayden Carter, 4th grade, intently worked three cards at the same time in the hopes of getting a Bingo at last week’s Bingo for Books, held at the Mission school cafeteria. Lots of other kids and their families worked similar cards, with the prize being one of the 370 kids’ books.

Actually, everyone was eventually given a ticket to get a free book.

“We want to get kids reading,” Librarian Evelyn Jeannotte said.

The program started a dozen years ago and is paid for by a grant.

“The kids need more books to read at home,” she said. “The more books they have, the better.”

Students from the Targeted Enrichment Activities program sold snacks and drinks during the event to help raise funds for the school’s Mission Playground Possible project.

“The profits are going towards the playground,” Teacher Susan Batiuchok said. “We feel the playground is a necessity.”

Announcer Connie Trudeau entertained the crowd while calling out the letter-number combinations.

“You must B5 to enroll in kindergarten this year, B5,” she said smiling.

Lesli Bennett-Incashola, 7, picked-up a book after getting a Bingo.

“This is the one I wanted,” she said. “It’s a book about ice skating. I’m so happy.”

Kiyara Johnston and Natalie Helser worked the snack counter and played Bingo at the same time. They agreed that getting a book was the best part of the night.

Sixth grader Azia Umphrey looked through the books to find something she hasn’t read yet. The best part of the night she said is “playing Bingo with my family.”
