POLSON — It was a contest, and kids love contests — at least the kids at Linderman Elementary School do.

Of course, the thought of mouthwatering pizza might have helped.

The Box Tops for Education contest prize was a pizza party for the top collecting class in each grade.

For a month, students checked box tops and labels for the Box Tops for Education logo, then ripped them off or cut them out. They persuaded their grandmothers, aunts, uncles and neighbors to save Box Tops for Education and brought them all to school.

In a month’s time, the kids collected more than 12,000 box tops, which translates to $1,200. Each box top or label is worth 10 cents.

The Parents and Teachers group sponsored the contest, according to Sara Brookman, PAT president.

“It’s amazing. We just did (the contest) for one month,” Brookman said.

Brookman said PAT member Janella Finkbeiner had seen the contest done at another school and encouraged the group. Graphs for each class climbed the wall in the cafeteria so kids could check their class progress.

The money raised will be used for mini-grants for Linderman teachers, Brookman said.

But keep saving those Box Tops for Education for the next drive, she added.
