The Polson Purple Wave were able to put a heartbreaking loss in the semifinals behind them to capture third place at the 2010 Splash Classic Sunday.

The U12 team didn’t dwell on being kept out of the championship game by a one-run loss for the second week in a row, instead they took their frustration out on the Fury, beating the Frenchtown team 8-0 to finish in third place.

“I was very proud of the girls. They kept their heads up after the loss and came out and played really hard and got a great win,” Purple Wave Manager Kirk Murphy said.

The Wave scored three runs with a two-out rally in the first. Skyla Krantz, Sarah Rausch, Marlee Congdon and Veronica Marquardt each had singles in the rally and Kiley Murphy drew a walk.

Jenna Evertz started the second by drawing a walk and came around to score and shortstop Hannah Potter single and scored to make it 5-0 in the second. Taylor Brackey was hit by a pitch in the third and stole two bases on her way to score the Purple Waves sixth run in the game.

Krantz singled to start the fourth for the Purple Wave’s seventh and final hit in the game. Both Krantz and Murphy, who was hit by a pitch, came around to score in the final inning.

After walking and giving up a single to the first two batters she faced, Murphy struck out the side to get out of the jam. Murphy finished her second shutout of the day with 10 strikeouts. Murphy started the day by striking out 12 of the 13 batters she faced in the Waves shutout victory over Anaconda.

With not much to do on defense, the rest of the Wave got in on the action with their bats. The Wave scored 13 runs on 12 hits. Rausch had a triple and Murphy had a double in the Wave’s nine-run third, where they came up to bat 14 times.

In the semifinals against Bitterroot, Rausch gave the Wave the lead starting off the second with a single. Rausch stole two bases on her path to home. Brackey and Marquardt also singled in the inning. The Sparks scored took the lead with two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. It was their only two hits in the game.

The Purple Wave will travel to Great Falls this weekend.
