POLSON — The 4th annual Flathead Lake Blues Festival, scheduled for Aug. 14 to 16, asked for use of Salish Point Park at the Feb. 12 Polson City Commissioners meeting.

The request includes an extension of park hours to 12:15 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday and closing Salish Kootenai-Pend Oreille Loop during the festival. The commissioners approved the request.

Polson Police Chief Wade Nash reported on the Mission Mountain Drug Task Force. He gave January statistics: 25 drug cases opened; 288 pills confiscated; $71,591 in illegal drugs, street value; $1,928 cash; 16 search warrants executed and 16 pending felonies.

Since the other drug task force disbanded in 2005, Nash compared the drug problem in Polson to a yard.

“If you quit watering and mowing your lawn, the weeds would take over,” Nash said.

Law enforcement has dedicated officers to the task force and made it a priority.

He also cautioned people that officers are seeing a lot of stolen checks.

“Be vigilant about your checks,” he said.

To businesses, Nash said to make sure there is proper identification when accepting a check.

In other business, the commissioners also approved Resolution 1053, for an election on the question of conducting a local government review,  establishing a study commission to complete the review and setting aside $14,500 to fund the study commission.

Polson City Manager said cities must vote on whether to conduct the study every 10 years according to the Montana Constitution. If voters agree on the local government review in the primary election on June 3, then a five-member government study commission will be elected during the general election in November 2014.

After the study commission completes its work, their proposed changes will be placed on the ballot in November 2016 for voters to decide upon.

In other business, commissioners appointed Johna Morrison and Billie Jo Rinke for one-year terms on the board of adjustment to expire Dec. 31. They also approved Larry Ashcraft and Trudy Pedersen for a three-year term of membership on the board of adjustment to expire Dec. 31, 2016.

The next regularly scheduled city commission meeting will be held on March 3 at 7 p.m. at Polson City Hall.
