Healthy hearts were pounding to musical beats Wednesday in Linderman gym, as red-faced, sweaty and laughing schoolchildren jumped at the chance to support the American Heart Association. Rock and roll tunes motivated students as they exercised with colorful hula-hoops, jump ropes and a variety of items meant to encourage movement.

For more than 20 years, young Polson students have raised funding through the annual two-hour Jump Rope For Heart event. This year’s donation of more than $5,900 almost doubled what students raised last year.

The energetic and motivated bunch gleaned donations in a variety of ways, tapping family and community members. An online donation site made it easy for out-of-state relatives to donate.

With dad in tow, Annabelle Gunderson visited Polson businesses and raised $311, the second-highest dollar amount collected right behind winner Ramzi Maaliki, who gathered $411.

Annabelle asked for funds from people at the Lake County Courthouse, Main Street businesses and First Interstate Bank. The bank employees alone pitched in $141, she said.

Although it was her first time participating — and her last, she said, because next year she’ll be in middle school — she wanted to raise funds “so people with heart disease can get better.”

The top six fundraisers also included Taylor Hendrickson, $275; Ella Anderson, $258; Caitlyn Sandford, $255; and Shanoah Losleben, $244.

“Pat yourselves on the back,” said Micki Stanley, Linderman physical education instructor as she announced the grand total.

Jump Rope For Heart is a national education and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Through the event, children learn the value of community service while learning how to develop heart-healthy habits and be physically active. The American Heart Association uses the funds raised to support educational and awareness programs with roughly 28 percent going to research, according to their website.
