News from Polson Heart and Soul

POLSON — The winner of the Polson Heart and Soul Art Car Contest and Giveaway was announced at the conclusion of the Polson Winter Carnival on the afternoon of Sunday, March 16.

As the Winter Carnival crowd exited Polson High School, many gathered in anticipation around a covered vehicle parked in front of the school. Five upperclassmen at PHS were called forward by Polson Heart and Soul project coordinators Daniel and Darlis Smith. Honorable mentions and $25 checks were presented to Austin Piedalue (Cheryliscious design), Cory Hedeen (Rodeo and Fire design), Preston Alexander (Lake Monster design) and Lailani Faialaga (Cultural Tribute design). That left Isak Petersen, PHS senior, as the last contestant standing.  He watched in happy anticipation as the car cover was removed to reveal his winning “Hometown Scenery” design wrapped in vinyl onto a 1989 Buick Electra Park Avenue. Within minutes of receiving the keys to his newly won car, Isak took three friends on a couple of test laps around the high school parking lot. “It’s cool,” he exclaimed. “Ya, it’s sick,” a friend agreed.

Isak’s car design features a photo of The Narrows at sunset on the right side panel, a photo of the snow-capped Missions on the left side panel, Montana’s 406 area code on the hood, and a Flathead Lake and lake monster design on the hardtop. It won the contest by receiving more Facebook votes than any of the other design entries. The Buick was donated to the Heart and Soul project by the Smiths. They enlisted the help of Pierce Dodge, Ronan Auto Body, D & D Customs/SignPro and Les Schwab to make the art car contest a reality. “We couldn’t have done this fun youth project without the contributions of these local automotive professionals; we are really grateful to them,” Darlis Smith said.

Isak is the son of Polson schoolteachers Jon and Bonnie Petersen. Jon Petersen congratulated his son on the win, but also expressed some apprehension, jokingly encouraging everyone who voted for Isak’s design to send money to help pay for insurance.
