RONAN — The first baby born at St. Luke Community Hospital when the doors opened in 1953 was Alan Unruh, who arrived on March 24, the day following the grand opening.
A layette filled with gifts appropriate for a newborn from the A. M. Sterling Company hardware store were given to mom Shirley Unruh for birthing the first baby.
Now, 61 years later, Alan Unruh wanted to “pay it forward” to a baby born on March 24 at St. Luke.
“I just felt like that because Sterling had done something nice for my mom and me, that we should do the same for someone else,” Unruh explained.
The opportunity came on Monday, March 24, 2014, at 3:25 in the morning, when Holden Paulsen arrived at the St. Luke New Beginnings Birth Center. The 6-pound, 15-ounce baby boy is the son of Rochelle Selfors and David Paulsen of Ronan and was delivered by Dr. Hickmat Maaliki.
The new arrival is the recipient of an assortment of gifts and gift certificates ranging from diapers and onesies to even gifts for the new mom.
“I just want to say a big thank you to Alan for everything he got for Holden and me,” Selfors said. “It was really a nice surprise.”
