POLSON — Five Polson Middle School students — Laurel Bitterman, Geneva Des Lions, Carson McDaniel, Cheyenne O’Connor and Nico River — participated in the SAT Challenge sponsored by the Montana Association of Gifted and Talented Education.
Ten PMS students took the SAT, and five of those kids earned a top score and qualified for the awards ceremony, where they received a medal and a certificate. The three high scorers in reading, math or writing, and the top three for the composite level earned a $250 scholarship. Geneva received a scholarship for her composite score.
Keynote speaker at the Montana Agate Conference was Brian Housand, who spoke to parents and kids about guidelines for technology use. He also told students it’s okay to be a really bright kid and celebrate their talent, according to Tamara Fisher, Polson gifted and talented teacher.
Fisher said this is the fourth year in a row Polson kids have won a scholarship.
For middle school students, the SAT test is “radically off level,” Fisher said, meaning that it’s designed for much older students.
The awards ceremony was held in Billings on April 4 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
