POLSON — SAFE Harbor, who aids domestic violence victims, recently helped some local Ronan and Polson High School girls.

DeeAnn Richardson, SAFE Harbor executive director, was contacted by Ronan High senior parent Shelly Cordis. Cordis voiced concern about many college girls experiencing violent attacks on campuses. She suggested SAFE Harbor bring in or help support a self defense class for these girls for protective measures.

Richardson contacted 3 Rivers Defense out of Three Forks. Husband and wife instructors Andrew and Brigitte Tuller agreed to forfeit the normal $50 fee per person for a four hour class and teach it for free. Polson Fitness agreed to let them hold the class at their facility, where 11 girls from Ronan and Polson participated April 30, along with Richardson. The class trained girls to be aware of their surroundings at all times, use defensive measures in case of an attack and some tips on what to look for in a predator.

Cordis told the instructors that getting a group of girls all together this time of the year so close to graduation was a real challenge. But giving these girls some personal safety education will make being away from home a little easier and will give them confidence to be on their own, Cordis said, and it also makes a parent feel better in letting them go and worry a tiny bit less about them when they are away at college. The girls and their parents wish to thank everyone involved with making this happen.
