RONAN – A dozen volunteers gloved up and grabbed trash bags last Saturday for the annual Ronan Cleanup Day, hosted by the Ronan Area Chamber of Commerce.

Past chamber president Brennin Grainey handed out treats and coffee to a handful of people who braved chilly and wet conditions to tidy up the town.

Grainey said the low turnout is typical, but the event is still important. JoAnn Ducharme recently returned to the town after spending 40 years in Alaska and said she was surprised that there was so little left to do.

“We drove around and it was hard to find anywhere that needed cleaning,” Ducharme said. “It was pretty clean already.”

In the city park volunteers found scant amounts of cigarette butts and pieces of candy wrappers.

In the field behind Harvest Foods and the town’s laundromat, there were a few more bits of debris, but still not much.

A huge dumpster was available for the intake of the waste.

“It’s got old broken chairs,” young Ella Grainey reported at the day’s start after she climbed the rungs to peek in.

By the end of the day the dumpster was much more full, with debris picked up by the volunteers, including large debris like old refrigerators that was collected by City of Ronan Public Works Director Dan Miller.
