POLSON — Picture this — the Mission Mountain Wood Band set up on a barge anchored at Sacajawea Park for a Fourth of July concert, fans packing the lawn.

Well, 2014 is the year. Band members Rob Quist and Steve Riddle were in town to announce the band’s appearance in Polson on the Fourth of July and also the release of a greatest hits album. The album will also include three new songs — “Everywhere Feels Like Home,” written by Tim Ryan and Kostas; “Have a Little Fun Tonight,” authored by Ryan and Sharon Vaughn; and “Rolling Down the Highway” by Quist and Ryan.

Sacajawea Park has some historical significance for the Mission Mountain Wood Band, too. Riddle was playing in a band called Silver Cloud, and Quist came up to visit. With Terry Robinson, the two planned how to put the Mission Mountain Wood Band together, and then camped out in sleeping bags in the park.

The Mission Mountain Wood Band gained national popularity from 1973-1981, touring the country and playing as many as 320 shows per year.

The band has played with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Elvin Bishop, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, the Allman Brothers, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt and others. They appeared on Hee Haw twice and were on the Cheryl Ladd TV special.

“We all had a big crush on Bonnie Raitt,” Quist said.

Riddle said the band is at the juncture now where they want their performances to be a special time for people to get together with the Mission Mountain Wood Band and each other — sort of a reunion that feels like a Griz game.

“It’s always good to play with the Missions behind us,” Quist said.
