News from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes

PABLO — Local third-grade artists from across the Reservation have completed excellent entries for this year’s annual International Migratory Bird Day poster contest sponsored by the CSKT Wildlife Management and Information & Education Programs Tribal Wildlife Program. The public is invited to stop by the lobby of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Complex in Pablo from May 12-15 to cast votes for their favorites. Each class and individual will receive a prize for participating. Special prizes will be awarded to the winners, who will be announced during the 2014 Community Bird Festival at Salish Kootenai College May 22.

This year’s International Migratory Bird Day theme is “Why Birds Matter: The benefit of birds to humans and nature.” Everyone is encouraged to go outside and enjoy the over 250 birds that can be observed in our communities. Birding is a fun way to enjoy nature, get exercise and spend time with family and friends. You can also help birds by planting native shrubs and trees, keeping your bird feeders clean and joining the Mission Mountain Audubon Society. Consider attending our Community Bird Day Festival on May 22 from 5-8 p.m. at the Salish Kootenai College Joe McDonald Health and Athletic Center.
