The Memorial Day parade in Polson was followed by a service at Lake View Cemetery, where the guest speaker was Navy Chief Rich Beauchamp, Commander of American Legion, Polson. A feeling of reverance was present as Old Glory surrounded the Memorial Day service.

In Ronan, the festive flag waving and thunderous roar of motorcycles in Ronan’s Memorial Day parade stilled into thoughtful silence as a memorial service followed at the veteran’s memorial in Bockman Park on Monday.

Infant Abrianna Mitchell enthusiastically waved a flag as veteran James Pettit gave a speech about the true meaning behind the day: the service members who gave their lives in the line of duty. “When you are in the service of your fellow man, you are also in the service of your God,” Pettit told the crowd that watched on as members of the local honor guard stood in salute.

A Battle Cross constructed by Ronan veteran Chuck Lewis honored those who gave their lives for their country, and members of the Ladies Auxiliary of Ronan VFW Post 5652 tossed a remembrance wreath into Spring Creek near the Gold Star Mother’s Memorial. As the current slowly carried it away, the group of approximately 100 solemnly watched on, remembering the brave souls who never made it home.

Before coming to Ronan, the Mission Valley Honor Guard presented colors in Arlee and two cemeteries in St. Ignatius to honor those who lost their lives serving their country.
