Thirty seniors turned their tassels, tossed their caps, and remembered one who did not live long enough to walk the stage in Sunday’s celebratory graduation ceremony in Charlo.
“I realize that all this time I’ve been preparing for the rest of my life,” salutatorian Connor Daugherty said in his address.
Valedictorian Tonya Hertz said that she has no doubt her classmates will go on to become outstanding people.
“We’ve been together for many years and now it’s time for each of us to head off on our different paths,” Hertz said.
As they jump headlong into the great unknown, guest speaker Jean P. Toussaint encouraged the graduates to work hard and be unyielding to the fear of change. Life’s path will not always go as planned, Toussaint said.
The 2008 Charlo graduate had his sights set on a chemical engineering degree when he departed the town six years ago. He found out he didn’t want to be an engineer for the rest of his life and that his passion was in medicine. After a change of course, Toussaint is now in his third year of medical school at the University of Washington.
“I guess if I have any advice to give, it would be to cultivate your curiosity,” Toussaint said.
In its celebrations the group remembered one student who won’t get to explore post-graduate life. Classmate Rebecca Jean Smith died due to complications with leukemia on Jan. 17, 2013, a little more than a year before she would have graduated. She competed in volleyball, basketball, track and 4-H.
Principal Steve Love commended the class for remembering Smith.
