Mike Kenmille led the Chief Cliff drum in the processional for the class of 2014 at Two Eagle River School. Then he had a few words for the students before he said a prayer.

“Don’t just dream your dreams, grab onto them,” Kenmille said.

The TERS graduation speaker was a husband-wife team this year. Rodney Bird, a social studies teacher at TERS and a recent graduate from the University of Montana with a masters in educational leadership, introduced his wife, Claudette Bird.

Also a TERS employee, Claudette is the home school coordinator, a liaison between the school and students and their families. This fall she will begin her 22nd year at TERS.

Describing each graduate, Claudette had insightful and sometimes funny things to say.

She ended her speech by saying, “Please go on to the next stage in your life with an open heart and an open mind.”

English teacher Rebekah Dalbey read a letter from Audrey Finley, a TERS graduate and a Gates Millennium Scholar just finishing her second year at Seattle Pacific University.

“Graduating from high school is a terrifying thing,” Finley wrote.

Then she wrote that college, learning new things and going new places was great.

“You did it. You graduated. Now get out there and explore the world,” Finley wrote.

Dalbey added her advice, “Don’t let your life happen to you, make it happen.”

To help begin their lives, Juan Perez from Salish Kootenai College presented scholarships to the graduates.

After TERS school board chair Felicia Paul presented diplomas, students watched a video slide show of their lives and time at TERS. Then it was time to celebrate graduation with family and friends.
