POLSON – The Mission Valley Mariners kicked off their summer play after a three week hiatus with a few “close but no prize” games, leaving the M’s 0-2 in conference.

On Saturday the Mariners played a nine-inning pick-up game against the AA Missoula Mavericks at home. The M’s limited their scoring to only one inning, picking up two runs in the seventh, which ended in a 2-3 loss to the Mavs. Despite the loss Zeke Webster-Yaqui saved runs with two phenomenal catches in centerfield. TJ Olson batted in the M’s only two runs with a shot over the right field wall also going 3-4 on the game.

Sunday, the Mariners opened up the season’s conference play with two in Missoula against the A Missoula Mavericks. Although the M’s staged a four run come back in the fifth and sixth innings, they were unable to gain the lead, falling to the Mavs 4-5. Bransen Krebs led the M’s going 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Mariners came out of the gate scoring three runs right away but the Mavs answered back in the bottom of the first with six, setting the mood of an uphill battle for the M’s resulting in the 5-7 tumble for the Mariners. Webster-Yaqui and Bradley Pichler each finished at 2-4 with Webster-Yaqui pushing two across the plate and Pichler chipping in another. Brenan Andrews and Jacob Harrod each went 2-3 for the game.

The Mariners will head to Helena June 14-19 to defend their Cloninger Classic title and will also mark the jumpstart of the M’s busy tournament and conference summer play.
