RONAN — The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries recently announced that 219 school libraries in the country received a total of $1,095,000 in grants in 2014. Each school received $5,000 in grants to extend, diversify, and update library book collections for students.

Ronan’s K. William Harvey Elementary School was one of the recipients.

“In my time here, this is the first time we’ve gotten the Laura Bush Grant,” said Ted Madden, K. William Harvey principal.

Madden said they will replace some old books, and get some new books.

“The advent of common core requires more informational reading,” he said. “We already have some, but it will help us expand our selection of informational texts.”

The school librarian has already ordered the first $1,200 worth of books. They anticipate their arrival in the next couple of weeks to have them ready for the kids for next year.

According to the news release, the foundation has given $11.5 million in yearly grants to schools in the 50 states, and $6.3 million to school libraries in the Gulf Coast region.

Since 2002, the mission has remained to support children’s education.

Rocky Boy Elementary School of Box Elder, Bryant Elementary School of Helena, and Wolf Point Junior/Senior High School in Wolf Point also received the grant in Montana.
