Charlo girls win district 14C title, boys fall to Arlee in championship

RONAN – The Arlee boys’ defeated the Charlo Vikings Saturday night in the 14-C Championship in Ronan, as four Arlee players finished in double figures. Arlee came away with the 59-51 win Saturday, as they improve to 17-3 on the season, with Charlo falling to 17-3.

Both teams advance to the Western C Championship, which begins Thursday in Butte.

The building was electric as both teams took the stage, with both sides matching each other as the first frame got underway. Midway through the first quarter, the game was tied at seven, when a free throw by Arlee’s Trae Burland and a three by Kasey Bridgewater put the Warriors up 9-8 with 50 seconds play. At the end of the first frame, Arlee led 12-10.

The game continued to go back and forth through the second quarter, with the game becoming tied back up at 14-14 with 6:25 remaining in the half.

Harvey “Jr.” Sansavere added a three-pointer, while Charlo fought back with Chico Stipe getting fouled, creating a three-point play at the line. The Vikings had a hard time getting second chance shots, as they were allowing the Warriors to get most of their offensive rebounds. With 55 seconds left in the half, Arlee’s Jesse Pfau added yet another three give the Warriors a 27-19 lead. At the half, Arlee was up six points, with a 29-23 lead.

During the third quarter, Dillon Delaney put up a three-pointer with 6:21 remaining in the frame. The Vikings attempted to inch closer to the Warriors, with the score becoming 31-25, in favor of Arlee. The Warriors began driving the ball to the rim, either laying the ball in, or picking up the foul in the process. At the beginning of the fourth frame, Arlee only led 38-34.

Arlee outscored Charlo 21-13 in final quarter to come away the victory.

The crowd was brought to their feet when Charlo’s Delaney was fouled while making a three-pointer. He completed the four-point play. As the fourth quarter continued, the crowd’s presence intensified, both sides on their feet in attempt to out-cheer the other side.

The game began slipping away from Charlo, as head coach Michael Brown received a technical foul with two minutes remaining. With 70 seconds left in the game, the Warriors were up 55-46. The Vikings put up a three-pointer to inch closer, only being down seven points, but it was too late. The Warriors ended up winning 59-51.

Burland led the Warriors with 15 points, while Pfau put up 13, Sansavere 12, and Bridgewater added 12.

Delaney scored 15 for the Vikings, while Stipe added 11, and Chance Rosenbaum put up 8.

Arlee took down Two Eagle River Friday to advance to the Championship game, winning 53-51. Charlo beat Noxon 49-42 Friday to also advance to play Arlee in the Championship.

The Lady Vikings (18-2) continued their conference dominance, topping the Scarlets (6-12) in the divisional championship game Saturday evening in Ronan 57-24. With the win, Charlo earned the league’s top seed in the Western C tournament, which begins Wednesday in Butte.

The Lady Vikings’ relentless defense was the difference, as they prevented Arlee from ever getting into the game.

Charlo began with a 12-0 run in the first 4:30 of the game and never looked back. At the end of the first frame the Scarlets had only one free throw and trailed 14-1.

The first field goal for Arlee came at the 6:42 mark of the second quarter, with the score now 15-3. Charlo began stepping up offensively, going on an 18-6 run throughout the second quarter. At the half, the team had built a comfortable 33-9 lead.

During the third frame, it was all Lady Vikings as they continued to hold the Scarlets to a low percentage of made shots. With just 25 seconds remaining in the third, Mahalia Hendren put up a quick three points as she was fouled driving the ball to the rim.

At the end of the third, Charlo was in complete control of the game, extending the lead to 43-18.

The Lady Vikings continued to roll in the fourth quarter as they outscored Arlee 14-6, taking the easy win with a final score of 57-24.

Charlo’s Jordan Ludeman led all scorers with 16, while Kinley Pope added 13 points in the win.

For Arlee, Hendren finished the game with 13, while Whitney Malatare added 9.

Charlo blew out Hot Springs to advance to the championship game 33-5 on Friday, while Arlee beat Noxon 62-36.
