POLSON — Is it true that you never really learn to swear until you learn to drive?
Let me continue with another of our outstanding members:
Mary Arden moved to Polson in 1975 after her husband, Rodney, retired from police work in Fresno, Calif., where he was a sheriff’s deputy. She got involved with the Senior Center, plying her skills at quilt making. Rodney became quite involved also, serving as cashier at the lunches. It was probably out of necessity; Mary was so involved it was the only way he was going to get lunch. She would be the first one at the center in the morning and left at the end of the day when we locked up. After Rodney’s passing, the Senior Center became her life, if it wasn’t before.
Last fall Mary was suffering from kidney stones. After that, she moved into the Polson Rehabilitation Center to recover. She has also had cataract surgery, which extended her stay. Mary is now quite content there, probably directing their traffic much the way she did at the center.
One of Mary’s pet sayings was that the center was a nut house and she joked about Warm Springs keeping a room open for her. I would tell her that I stopped and checked when I was passing through and they were still keeping a room open for her.
The toenail clinic is on the second Tuesday of the month. This month it is on July 9.
And remember, there will be no bingo in the month of July and it will resume on Aug. 1.
Our center will be closed on July 4.
The lunch menu for the coming week will feature:
• Thursday, July 3: Manwich’s with baked beans
• Friday, July 4: we will be closed
• Monday, July 7: spaghetti with garlic bread
• Tuesday, July 8: meatloaf sandwiches with potato salad
• Wednesday, July 9: hamburger steak and gravy
