Lady Bulldogs take care of Troy, Deer Lodge

ST. IGNATIUS — Heading into the final week of the season, the Lady Bulldogs continue to separate themselves from the weaker teams in the Western B-C Division, but can’t join the ranks of the elite teams in the conference.
Last week, the Lady Bulldogs recovered from a 10-3 loss to Loyola by doubling up Troy 12-6 and taking care of Deer Lodge 9-2 to improve to 10-4, with all four losses coming at the hands’ of the conference’s top three teams.
Last week, Mission coach Susan Weaselhead saw her team do a lot of things that brought them closer to the top teams in the conference. The Lady Bulldogs’ bats are getting hot – they had 30 hits in the three games – and their defense is starting to clamp down, after giving up six costly errors against Loyola, the Lady Bulldogs didn’t commit an error against the Lady Trojans and Lady Wardens.
Against Loyola Thursday in St. Ignatius, the Lady Bulldogs were able to get to Heart Breaker ace Sarah Goodman, who the first time around limited them to four hits. The Lady Bulldogs had nine hits, but only scored two runs, stranding eight baserunners.
“We had hits, we just couldn’t get them home. The third base coach couldn’t get them home,” Weaselhead said.
Lady Bulldog shortstop Kinley Pope went 3-for-4 with a RBI. She drove in Bryanna Steele in the fourth inning with a single. Pope also scored a run. After a double in the first inning, she came around to score on a Katie McDonald single. McDonald, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, tied the game at 2, on a Dalena Weaselhead single.
With a 5-3 lead heading into the fifth, the Heart Breakers put the game away with a five-run inning.
The Lady Bulldogs had to battle back from a four-run deficit to beat the Lady Trojans in Troy Friday. After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning the Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in their half of the second to take the lead for good. The Lady Bulldogs had four singles in the inning, with Steele driving in two runs on her one-base hit. Katie McDonald and Bella Dally each drove in a run off of their singles. McDonald finished 3-for-5 and Dally went 2-for-5. The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the third, fourth and sixth inning and a single run in the fifth.
They had a season-high 18 hits in the game and only struck out twice. Kyla Olson gave up 13 hits in the game, but limited the damage by striking out 10 Lady Trojans. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.
Against the Lady Wardens Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs broke open a close 2-1 game with a five-run third inning, despite not having a hit in the inning.
