POLSON — Why is it that when someone tells you that there are one billion stars in the universe you believe them, but if they tell you there is wet paint you have to touch it to check?

Are you lost? That was usually Barry Webb’s greeting. Barry was a fixture around Polson; everybody knew Barry. And Barry knew everybody. The first of two children, Barry was a special child. He did complete high school while always being watched over by his younger sister Charlotte. Many others around town also provided support. Barry loved the movies. He’d show up with his hat and six-guns. Everybody knew when Barry was in the audience; not the quietest lad in town.

Barry never left home and was his mother’s caregiver in her later years as she lost her sight. He did the shopping, cooking and tending to her but always showed up for lunch at the Polson Senior Center. From there it was a stroll around town, stopping at several of his favorite places: 93 Auto Care to have his usual diet Coke soda (it generally sprayed all over when he opened it), Jackie M’s shoe store and others. Barry was Polson High School’s greatest fan and missed very few sport games.

Some days his sister would be in town and would take him to Spokane or someone would take him to Ronan to visit his mother, who by then was in a nursing home. Barry had his routine; when he didn’t show up downtown, the phone would ring at the Senior Center inquiring if Barry was all right. Every week Barry went to the bank and was given his money for the week to cover Senior Center lunches, his sodas and for his regular Wednesday afternoon movie. Barry was always impressed by the fact that he was born on his birthday, which incidentally was on Cinco de Mayo. Yes, Barry was a fixture around Polson, if not an institution. Barry succumbed to lymphatic cancer. A bench on Main Street is dedicated to Barry. He lives on in our hearts.
