‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

POLSON — The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold its 49th annual Harvest Dinner of Swedish meatballs, potatoes, gravy, homemade lefse, salad and dessert from 4-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, in the church fellowship hall. The cost of dinner is $10 per adult and $5 per child under 12 years. Call ahead to place take-out orders at 406- 883-5864. Dinners will be available for pickup after 3 p.m. It is the desire of Good Shepherd to keep prices reasonable because this dinner is a mission/outreach of our community so donations are always welcome. Art, homemade crafts and bake goods will be sold from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be soup, sandwiches and an apple dumpling with ice cream served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Proceeds are used for local and church-wide Mission Outreach.

Group holds free benefit dinner for veterans, Goldstar families

POLSON — Welcome Home Inc. is a new non-profit organization in Polson. They are planning a casual attire benefit dinner to honor local veterans on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 5-7 p.m. at the Red Lion Inn. They are planning on between 100-120 people attending this free event. There will be guest speakers from Sen. Tester's office and Sen. Daines’ office as well as local veterans sharing their stories. Some of our board members will introduce the services we offer free to veterans, gold star members and their families. Our services include a wide range of services from educational, medical and financial to emotional and recreational therapy. POLSON — Classic Country Jammin’ will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3, in the Elks ballroom, on Main Street from 2– 5 p.m. This event will continue to be held on the first Sunday every month. Bring your guitar, banjo, mandolin, auto-harp, fiddle, drum, bass, sax, keyboard, etc., and join us for a few hours of fun. Discover secrets to winning novels

POLSON — On Saturday, Nov. 9, from 1-2:30 p.m. at the North Lake County Library, Gwen Florio of Humanities Montana will present “Five Steps to a Winning Novel.” In judging contests, such as the 2019 Edgar Awards, novelist Gwen Florio read hundreds of books, a process that revealed some very specific things that made a few novels shoot to the top of the list, while other, perfectly well-written books, faded in comparison. This workshop will focus on those key qualities, with specific examples, and advice and techniques on achieving them. Gwen is an award-winning journalist and author. She is the news editor of the Missoulian.

Free play uplifts, tickles funny-bone

POLSON/PABLO — “Every Brilliant Thing” is a moving story that is so timely and important. This is a free production that runs for approximately 60-70 minutes. The first performance will be held at the Port Polson Theater at 2 p.m. The second performance will take place at the SKC Arlee/Charlo Theater at 7 p.m. This play is a tribute to the irrepressible resilience inside all of us and the capacity to find delight in the everyday. “Every Brilliant Thing” is a funny, clever, and surprisingly uplifting play about the lengths we go to for those we love.

POLSON — Monday, Nov. 18, is the first day of North Lake County Public Library’s “Food for Fines” program. It runs through Saturday, Nov. 30. You can pay off your library fines by donating food. For each item donated, $2 of fines will be forgiven. Sealed, commercially prepared, nonperishable food items with current expiration dates can be given to the circulation desk. This program does not include fees for lost or damaged items. All donations will go to the Polson Loaves and Fish Food Pantry.

POLSON — Providence St. Joseph Medical Center will support the University of Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State Bobcats, Nov. 13-22, with a “Brawl of the Wild” food drive. Grizzly and Bobcat fans are encouraged to bring food items to be placed into a Montana or Montana State collection box located in the hospital main lobby, 6 Thirteenth Ave. E. All food collected will be given to Polson’s Loaves and Fish food pantry.
