Sandpiper begins new exhibit
POLSON — The Sandpiper Art and Gift Gallery, 306 Main Street, begins their new exhibit, “Where Were You Hiding?” This exhibit runs from Sept. 3-Oct. 12. This is a non-juried show, open to all artists. Artistic interpretation of the theme, in any medium, will be accepted. There is a small entry fee for non-Sandpiper member artists. Dance at Elks Club in Polson

Library invites fantasy author to speak
POLSON — The first National Endowment for the Arts’ ‘Big Read’ event takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. at the North Lake County Library. Come meet Jess E. Owen, a Montana writer of “The Summer King Chronicles” fantasy series. She will discuss the influence of fantasy writing and the works of Ursula Le Guin on her authorship.

Farmers hear trade damage plan, payments
RONAN — A market facilitation program meeting for Lake County producers is set for Oct. 4 The Lake County USDA Farm Service Agency will host an informational meeting on the Market Facilitation Program on Oct. 4, 2018, from 1-4 p.m. in the Ronan USDA Service Center conference room, 64352 US Highway 93 in Ronan. FSA staff will provide an overview of the program and discuss eligibility and documentation requirements.
Learn about Taoism at the library

Victor Charlo to share his poetry
NINEPIPES — Victor Charlo started writing poetry in high school and at age 81, he still has stories and poems yet to write. One such story he has in his head is about a stick game at Dixon. Charlo will share poems from his first published work, Put Sey, (Good Enough), at Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. The October “First Saturday” featured artist is photographer Laurie Childs. Her stunning photos “link people and emotions with the land that makes the West distinct. Childs will not be personally present on Saturday, as is the custom for First Saturday artists, but viewing her moving body of work is a not-to-be-missed opportunity. Jim Pettit and Richard Tobel, two of our valley’s talented musicians, will provide favorite songs for everyone’s enjoyment from 2-3 p.m. At 3 p.m. the winning tickets for this year’s season-long raffle will be drawn. Indigenous film series begins
RONAN — Flathead Reservation Human Rights Coalition fifth annual free film series at the Entertainer Theatre in Ronan begins with their first film at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7. Children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Skinwalkers is the PBS adaptation of the Tony Hillerman novel with Wes Studi and Adam Beach as detectives solving crimes among the Navajo. Western Native Vote will register voters from noon-1 p.m.
Northwest Accordion Association invites all
POLSON — The Northwest Accordion Association will hold a musical jam and dance on Sunday, Oct. 7, in the ballroom at the Elks Club on Main Street. There will be a variety of music you can listen or dance to. You do not have to be a member of the Elks Club or the Accordion Association to attend, sing or play. If you sing or play you don’t pay. Admission is $2 for members, $3 for non-members, and $5 to become a member of the association. Everyone is welcome.

Learn to knit at Polson library through Oct. 30
POLSON — For four Tuesdays in October (9, 16, 23, and 30), North Lake County Public Library is offering four learn-to-knit sessions at 2 p.m. in the library atrium. Library volunteer and “Knitter-Extraordinaire,” Linda Kittle will be available to guide you and answer questions in the process as new knitters learn the beginning steps of casting on, garter and purl stitch, increasing and decreasing and binding off. Needles and yarn for practice will be available. The teapot will be on. Guys and gals, young and old, you can do this.

POLSON — The Flathead Basin Commission will hold its next meeting on Oct. 10, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Kwataqnuk Resort. The morning portion of the meeting will focus on administrative business as well as discussion and potential decisions on action items. An overview of priority issues will be provided. Spaghetti benefit helps after-school program
DAYTON — A spaghetti benefit dinner and dessert will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Idle Spur. The cost is $5 per person and $20 per family of four or more. This is a family friendly event and no alcohol will be served. There will be raffle prizes and games. This fundraiser will benefit the Dayton School’s after-school program. The PTO has secured two $5,000 grants to partially fund the program, but there is a matching provision for one of the grants. The PTO must raise $2,500 by Jan. 29, 2019, in order to receive the other $2,500, which would provide over 80 percent of the total funding needed for the program. POLSON — An Adult Coloring Program entitled, “Orange You Glad It’s Fall?” will take place at the North Lake County Library on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 2-4 p.m. in the meeting room.
Sharpen your pencils, coloring fans. Participants will briefly explore the dynamic color orange, followed by a time of relaxed coloring and fun conversation while knoshing on popcorn and drinking pumpkin spice coffee (or tea). All coloring supplies are provided. You may also bring your own. Time to break out the fall colors.
Take a photo tour of Botswana’s delta
POLSON — “Wildlife of Botswana’s Okavango Delta,” by Ron Hoff will be Mission Mountain Audubon’s next program on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Polson Library meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Ron’s photo tour will introduce you to the huge wetland swamp created by the Okavango River and many of its creatures. Ron Hoff earned his Master’s degree from U of M’s Flathead Lake Biological Station and is a retired biology teacher from Hellgate High School in Missoula.
