‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

Learn about the cloud

POLSON — Free technology classes are being offered at North Lake County Public Library in Polson during the month of April. On Wednesday, April 22, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the course, “Up in the Air: What is the Cloud, and How do I Use it?” will be taught. This class will introduce you to the various ways to compute in the Cloud.

Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Apple all have cloud-based software, and this class will show you each one and give you a short overview of how to set up an account and upload your files. You will need a valid email address to set up any accounts. Space is limited, so please call the library at (406) 883-8225 to register.  If you see a class you’d like to take, but can’t make it at the scheduled time, call for an individual free session. The library is located at 2 First Avenue E.

Mowbray to present new book to EAA

POLSON — EAA Chapter 1122 will meet on Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Polson Public Library. Please bring ideas for our T-shirts for the 2015 Fly-In to be held in September. Carmine Mowbray will be our program presenter and it will be based on her research for her new book “Havoc Red.” The book is a historical work about a WWII hero from Great Falls. Suicide Prevention meeting set

POLSON – Our next Partners in Suicide Prevention and Intervention meeting is on Wednesday, April 22, on the third floor of the Tribal Health Department in Polson. We will start a half hour earlier than normal. The meeting is from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Katharina Werner, Pathway Program Manager from Missoula YWCA, will be doing a Human Trafficking Training. Lunch will be provided. We enjoyed having everyone at our PSPI Cyber-Bullying and Campaign Development meeting.

Childhood trauma issues presented

ST. IGNATIUS – Parents, teachers and community members are invited to a presentation on Thursday, April 23, at Mission Valley UMC, top of Post Creek Hill. A potluck meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation, “Understanding ACEs,” (understanding childhood trauma and its influence), will be made by Dana Eisenberg, LCSW, at 6 p.m. Local law enforcement will discuss drug use on the reservation at 7:15 p.m. This event is sponsored by Flathead Reservation Human Rights Coalition, Inc. Explore Pacific Island birds right in Polson

POLSON — “Exploring Mountain Birds on Pacific Islands,” by Dr. Chris Filardi, will be the next Mission Mountain Audubon program on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in the Polson Library meeting room.

Filardi’s slide presentation will discuss the role of contemporary ornithological expeditions focused on tropical island birds found in only one place and nowhere else in the world. Filardi is Director of Pacific Programs at the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation with the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Save date for Kindergarten Round Up

RONAN — The Ronan School District No. 30 Kindergarten Round Up pre-registration for the 2015-16 school year will be held at the Ronan Middle School on Thursday, April 23, from 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. To be kindergarten eligible, a student must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 10, 2015. Bring their birth certificate and immunization record. Registering children will be screened in hearing, speech, vision and school readiness skills. Immunizations will be provided, as needed. Bring your child’s Healthy MT Kids/Medicaid or other health insurance card(s) if this service is required. Registration and screening takes about one hour, so plan accordingly. ‘Welcome to Polson’ signs dedicated

POLSON — Plan to take a few minutes at 10 a.m. Friday morning to attend the dedication ceremonies for the “Welcome to Polson” sign at the Walmart location. The completed signs, designed and created by Rob Gunderson, are ready to welcome visitors as well as residents. The signs are a collaborative effort of the Polson Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Polson Community Foundation, the Orton Foundation, Envision Polson Beautification Committee, and the city of Polson.

City manager to speak to Pachyderms

POLSON – Polson’s City Manager, Mark Shrives, will be the guest speaker at the Friday, April 24, meeting of the Lake County Pachyderm Club. He will talk about the proposed resort tax; the “water loop” currently under construction; a new water well on Hwy. 35; revamping the old 9 golf course irrigation system; remodeling the Riverside Park bathroom; progress on the sewer plant project; answer questions. Computer basics, Microsoft Word

POLSON — Free technology classes are being offered at North Lake County Public Library in Polson during the month of April. Dog park cleanup event planned

POLSON – On Saturday, April 25, join Polson dog lovers for a clean up of the Travis Dolphin Off-Leash Dog Park. Most of the work will be concentrated on the dock area, hauling junk metal and glass from the riverbank. Volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. near the dock area. Dinner, dessert auction to benefit fire chief

ARLEE — A spaghetti dinner fundraising event will be held Friday, May 1 at 5 p.m. in the Arlee School Cafeteria.

The fundraiser will support the family of Arlee Volunteer Fire Department Chief Don Henderson, who is fighting leukemia.

The dinner cost is a $5 donation per person or $20 per family.

Those who want to contribute beyond the cost of dinner may bring a dessert to auction off in a silent dessert auction.

Port Polson Players schedule Irish play May 8 - 17

POLSON – On Thursday, May 8 through Sunday, May 17, Port Polson Players will present “Shillelagh,” a modern Irish comedy centering on an Irish story of romance and rebellion. Half of the show features traditional Irish tunes; the other half are new songs written by Neal Lewing. A shillelagh is a stick recognized as a symbol of Irishness, used for walking or as a weapon. Curtain time is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Tickets are $15 for adults and $14 for students and senior citizens. Call (406) 883-9212

Winery teaches wine-chocolate pairing
