‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

Visiting author shares passion for history

NINEPIPE – Author Rick Steber is on a quest to share his passion about storytelling during his visit to the Mission Valley April 24-26. Steber has authored over 40 books, won numerous literary awards, and has been the featured speaker at national and international conferences. One of his most recent books, “Red White Black: A True Story of Race and Rodeo” relates the story of Jackson Sundown, and will be the focus of his public presentation at the Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25. Space is limited for this presentation. The ticket price of $20 per person also buys a raffle ticket; the three raffle items include a commemorative Pendleton blanket honoring Jackson Sundown, a gift package of Rick Steber books, and a vacation package valued at over $400. Explore the world of birds

BIGFORK — Montana State Parks (stateparks. mt.gov) invites you to explore the world of birds during a ranger-led hike “Birds of a Feather” at Flathead Lake State Park – Wayfarers Unit, 8600 Mt. Hwy 35, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, and at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. Meet at the Flathead Lake Ranger Station. Join a ranger on a short 1.5-mile hike to look for birds around the park and learn about some common and interesting species. A bird walk is a great way to get outside, introduce yourself and your family to birding, or refine your skills. A water bottle, sturdy shoes, and weather appropriate clothing are suggested. Binoculars and field guides will be provided. Meet at the Flathead Lake Ranger Station in the Harry Horn Day Use Area. The cost is $4 per person or $10 per family. Quilters hold busy meeting

RONAN — The Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will be having their regular monthly meeting at the Terrace Lake Community Church. This month’s meeting is jam packed and will be busy, busy, busy. We will start at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, with election of officers followed by presenting your March fabric challenge and show and tell. May is a big month for the Guild, for those of you who are new or are not members yet. May is Brown Bag Auction month, which means you bring anything sewing related in a brown bag. The bag will be auctioned off to raise money. The item can be anything having to do with sewing but have not had time for or don’t need or just don’t want. Tribal Police Chief speaks to Kiwanis Club

Refreshments will be available there also. Shred Day will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Glacier Bank, 50510 Highway 93. Two boxes per person are allowed. City of Polson Curbside Pick Up will also take place on Friday, May 4. Have your leaves and branches on the curb by 8 a.m. for “free” pickup. No garbage please.

'UnVariety Show' raises funds for SKC, embraces diversity

POLSON — A bigger, better, and certainly more amazing UnVariety Show 2.0 is heading to Polson on Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at the KwaTaqNuk Resort. Last year’s event drew more than 200 participants who watched a range of unforgettable performers and then capped the night with a karaoke marathon. Co-hosted by the Salish Kootenai College Spirit of Many Colors, SAFE Harbor and ACLU Montana, it is a night to embrace diversity, celebrate individuality and share in a high level of laughter. This is a night to promote human rights and to embrace “everyone’s value.” The event is also a fundraiser for scholarships at Salish Kootenai College and everyone is welcome. Audubon field trip offered

MISSION VALLEY — Flathead Audubon is offering a field trip with Janene Lichtenerg on May 6, from 7:30 a.m.-noon. Of particular interest is the long-billed Curlew. The group will meet north of Polson to explore some of the grassland habitats where we are likely to hear and see curlews. The trip will finish with a short walk at The Nature Conservancy’s Safe Harbor Marsh and Important Bird Area. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and snacks. Horsemen ride again

DAYTON — Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen’s 37th annual Steak Ride will take place on Sunday, May 6, at the Meuli Ranch in Dayton. Start between 9-11 a.m. Steaks are served between 3-3:30 p.m. Saturday night campers are welcome. There will be a potluck supper on Saturday night at 6 p.m. Continental breakfast Sunday morning. 50/50 tickets on sale and stick around door prizes to be awarded also. POLSON — Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the Polson High Theatre Production Club’s performance of “Reality Stars: Greek Gods Edition” have been rescheduled to Thursday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m. and on Friday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for students and $7 for adults. POLSON – Free gifts. Who doesn’t want a little present? The Lake County Parents as Teachers May Community Connection is all about gifts – for a mom or another special someone in your life, and for you, just for attending. It is happening at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Lake County Health Department, 801 Main Street in Polson. We have a couple of craft ideas for the young ones to create, either “all by myself ” or with your help, and a yummy no-sugar, no-bake treat that we are going to put together with everyone’s help. Pregnant moms and families with children under the age of five are welcome to attend the Parents as Teachers Community Connections. This is a good chance to meet other families with young children, and to learn more about the Parents as Teachers Home Visiting program. We’ll have a drawing for a door prize, and if you bring a friend, you are guaranteed a gift as well. Fundraiser planned for Carlos Rodriques

POLSON – A fundraiser to benefit Polson community member Carlos Rodriques will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Polson Elks Club on Main Street. Carlos became suddenly ill and has been hospitalized since early March with an autoimmune affliction that has compromised his nervous system, leaving him paralyzed. RONAN — The Mission Mountain Chapter Grizzly Scholarship Association will hold their “Golf for the Griz Memorial Tournament” with an 11 a.m. shotgun start on May 18 at the Mission Mountain Golf Course. Golf fees, dinner and prizes are $80 per person for non-pass holders and $70 per person for pass holders. These prices do not include carts. Dinner served at 4 p.m. is $25 for dinner only. Cherry Blossom Festival celebrated

YELLOW BAY – The 15th annual Yellow Bay Cherry Blossom Festival will be held on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 19 at the Yellow Bay Community Clubhouse. The clubhouse is located on Montana Hwy. 35 at mile marker 18. The festival is free and open to the public. This year’s event includes artisans and crafters offering an array of locally produced and hand-crafted items. Live music, free door prizes and lunch items for a nominal fee are also planned. The festival is a major fundraiser for the Yellow Bay Community Club. Proceeds help fund various charitable projects selected by the club, as well as maintenance of the 75-year-old clubhouse, home to potlucks, receptions, private celebrations, and cherry growers’ meetings.
