‘Park After Dark’ winter hike offered at Lone Pine State Park

KALISPELL — On Wednesday, Feb. 16, from  7:30-9 p.m. experience Lone Pine State Park on a wintery night on this full moon hike. Moon views vary depending on cloud cover, but you’re guaranteed a nighttime adventure that experiences the park after hours. Be sure to dress for the weather. Trails are typically icy at this time of year, so wear micro spikes like Yaktrax if there’s snow on the ground. We’ll have snowshoes available if needed. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Call the visitor center at 406-755-2706, ext. 0, to register, as space is limited. Cost is $4 per hiker ($8 entry fee for non-resident vehicles).

 

‘Prepare to be Bear Aware’ education class offered at Lone Pine

 

 

KALISPELL — On Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center, you can learn safety tips and tools to keep people safe and bears wild as they emerge from their dens this spring. Join us as we share practical strategies designed to minimize bear-human conflicts and promote coexistence. From securing garbage bins to proper food storage techniques, we will share provide invaluable insights into creating bear-resistant environments. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, connect, and take action for the well-being of all. Registration is required as space is limited. There is no charge for this program. Attend ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Concert

POLSON — The Polson Fairground Amphitheatre is the site of the “Here Comes the Sun” concert. This concert celebrates the sounds and songs of the Beatles at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each.

 

Country Jam, dances cancelled

POLSON — Our Classic Country Jammin’ scheduled for April 5, at the Elks Ballroom in Polson is cancelled until further notice. Wednesday night dances at the Elks’ ballroom in Polson are also cancelled until further notice. We pray that everyone is staying home and being safe. We do have to go out for essentials and that is okay. Lake City Bakery, McDonalds and Burgerville are open in Polson for take outs. We are all in this together and need to help each other wherever we can, physically or financially. Please encourage one another and we will all get through this. Don’t be prideful and not ask for help, if you really need it. This hardship we are going through may take a little time but if we all work together and for each other, it will pass. We hope to see you all again very soon.

Experience ‘Lights under the Big Sky’

RONAN — On Saturday, Dec. 11, “Lights Under the Big Sky” will provide fun and entertainment for residents of the Mission Valley at the Ronan Fairgrounds from 5-9 p.m. There will be holiday lights displays; family activities and Santa.

Free 'Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care' training held

PABLO — On April 22, from noon3 p.m. at Salish Kootenai College, Teresa Nygaard will present a free training entitled, "Utilizing Aces & Trauma Informed Care." Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term to describe traumatic events occurring before age 18. Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that without supports can have long-term negative effects. When “we” are trauma-informed, we realize the impact of trauma and understand there is potential for recovery. We recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in those that we interact with and in ourselves. We respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into procedures, policies and practices. We seek to actively resist re-traumatization. We stop asking “What’s happening to you?” This training delves into this topic, responding to participants based on their pre-existing knowledge of the topic.

Credits are available.

Boys and Girls Club announces summer program through Aug. 26

LAKE COUNTY — The Flathead Reservation and Lake County Boys and Girls Club will operate a summer program at both their Polson and Ronan sites Monday-Friday (not July 4) from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. The cost is $25 per month or $75 for the entire summer program, which runs June 13-Aug. 26. Applications may be picked up onsite or at: www.flatheadbgc.org. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by school feeding programs and a snack and dinner will be provided by the club. Activities include: art, technology, swimming, fitness, gardening, photography, robotics, reading, character development, hiking and community service. Additional activities include: Ninepipes Museum, library reading program, camping in Glacier Park, Summer Brain Gain program, SMART moves program.

Jocko Valley Museum opens

ARLEE — The Arlee Jocko Valley Museum, run by the Arlee Historical Society, opens for the summer July 4 and will be open every other Saturday from 2-4 p.m. or by appointment, until Labor Day. The museum has many historical displays including many photographs of Native and homesteading families. There are hundreds of obituaries with genealogy information. There is also a military display commemorating those who have given their lives for this country. The Arlee Museum is located at corner of Bouch and Fyant (by the grade school). County Fair adds new event

Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will hold their show at 10 a.m. The Lake County Fair has a new addition to the schedule with a 4-H project costume competition at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon. It should be entertaining for the participants and spectators alike. The day ends with a 5-7:30 p.m. 4-H open class talent show; 7:30 beef showmanship; 9-11 p.m. 4-H Ambassador’s Dance.

Join MSU alumni for dinner cruise, golf

POLSON — On July 29, area friends, MSU Alumni, families and Bobcat Boosters are invited to participate in a Flathead Lake dinner cruise. This event is designed specifically for MSU alums, families and friends whether or not you participate in the golf scramble. MSU President Waded Cruzado will host the cruise, which departs on board the “Shadow” from the KwaTaqNuk Resort at 6 p.m. and returns at 9 p.m. A buffet dinner will be served on the boat, as well as a cash bar. Tickets are $45 per person or $100 for a family with children under 12. The golf scramble is hosted at the Polson Bay Golf Club on July 30. The format will be similar to last year’s event. Summer food programs through Aug. 29

Summertime breakfast, lunch served  through Aug. 5

POLSON — June 6 is the first day of the free breakfast and lunch Summer Food Service Program in Polson. Cherry Valley, 107 Eighth Ave. W, is the site for the program. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m.-1:15 p.m., Monday-Friday. All children 18 years old and under eat for free. The program ends on Aug. 5.

 

Ronan summertime breakfast, lunch served through Aug. 19

RONAN — Ronan Middle School will serve kid friendly meals for lunch and breakfast Monday-Friday (excluding July 4th) from June 9-Aug. 19. Breakfast will be served from 8:15-10:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m.-12:55 p.m. There is no cost to all children 18 years old and younger. Adult meal prices are $2.50 for breakfast and $4 for lunch.

 

Food program begins in Pablo

PABLO — The first day of the free summer food program at Salish Kootenai College Joe McDonald Gymnasium begins June 13 and is open to kids ages 18 and under. Kids don’t have to be a part of Making Fitness Fun Program to eat. Breakfast is served from 8:30-10 a.m. and lunch is from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Horsemen present riding in southwest slideshow

POLSON — Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen’s monthly meeting is on Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ronan VFW on Round Butte Road. Kent and Charlene Krone, who spend their winters in the southwest and publish their experiences in horseman magazines, will be the presenters. Their slideshow about riding in parts of Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana will be about 45 minutes long. The slideshow starts in the first territorial capitol of Arizona and ends in the second territorial capital of Montana. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. You won’t want to miss this presentation folks.

Open house showcases Biological Station

YELLOW BAY — The Flathead Lake Biological Station will hold an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. The Flathead Lake Biological Station’s annual open house provides an opportunity for the interested public to learn more about the ecology of Flathead Lake and its watershed, as well as FLBS and its research around the globe. The open house allows FLBS scientists to showcase the breadth of their activities, as well as show examples of how ecological research at FLBS benefits Flathead Lake and subsequently area visitors and residents.
