POLSON — Cherry Valley Elementary School has a new principal — Brent Benkelman. He has some tough shoes to fill, those of Elaine Meeks, who guided Cherry Valley since 1989.
Benkelman was born in Bigfork and has been teaching kindergarten and first grade in Kalispell for the past six years.
“I really enjoy watching kids learn new things and making them light. I truly enjoy teaching them to read and believe it’s the greatest gift you can give children,” Benkelman said.
With a bachelor’s degree from the University of Montana and a master’s from the University of Texas-Arlington, Benkelman comes prepared for the job.
A hunter, angler and skier, Benkelman said he enjoys all sports. The Benkelman family — mom, dad, and two boys, one 6 years old and one 8 months old — are at home in Polson.
Benkelman said the Cherry Valley teachers and staff have been welcoming and open to new ideas.
“It feels good to be here. It’s been fun, and the kids have been great,” Benkelman said, standing in the hall as children head to class, separating around him like a school of trout.
