Despite faltering against Libby on Friday, the Polson Lady Pirates have booked a spot in the state softball tournament starting Thursday in Anaconda, playing as the Northwestern A’s No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Frenchtown. Libby ended up third in the conference.

“We finished strong,” veteran head Coach Larry Smith said of his squad’s season. “We kind of stumbled against Libby … but I feel our chances are very good (at State).”

The Lady Pirates open the tourney at 11 a.m. Thursday against Anaconda, the Southwestern A’s No. 3 seed. If Polson wins that round, the girls will go on to play the winner of Butte Central’s matchup with Park Livingston.

“But we’ve gotta win first,” Smith said.

He’s confident his team will pull through, based on past performances this season.

“We’ve been beating No. 1 teams from other conferences,” he said.

After handing Whitefish a sound beating Thursday, 35-1, Polson dropped its final regular-season game to Libby on Friday at home, with Logger pitcher Hannah England striking out nine Polson batters for the 7-4 win.
