Editor,

Along with many other citizens of Polson and the surrounding area, I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of a new eatery in Polson, Dude’s Place. Bill and Cynthia Barrett have poured heart and soul into this project, but now it has been effectively put to rest by the lack of support from our city government. I attended the Board of Adjustment hearing on July 10, along with a large group of friends and supporters. I felt that the Barretts and their attorney presented a solid case for the variance. But when the board began their discussion, it quickly became apparent that it was a losing effort.

I was born and raised in Polson, left with my husband after high school for our farm in Ledger, Montana, and returned seven years ago to retire on Finley Point. What I have observed about our hometown since our return is a lack of leadership to make Polson a place where small businesses are supported. I am not a city resident, so I cannot vote in city elections or serve on boards that play crucial roles. But I would certainly like to urge those who care about the future of our town to take action and make Polson a place that welcomes new businesses.

It is a huge disappointment when I drive by that big for sale sign on Bill and Cynthia’s building. And the real irony is the city banner that hangs alongside, welcoming visitors to “Shop, Dine, Relax.” Unfortunately, we will not be dining at Dude’s Place, and it is a loss to us all.
