Editor,

I retired a few years ago following a 45-year career in retail and moved to Polson, Montana, from the Chicago area. I have noticed how folks here tend to keep their politics to themselves, for the most part, which is understandable with the intense divide we find ourselves in today. While companies such as Hobby Lobby and Chick-Fil-A are well known to support conservative views, other than closing on Sundays, these companies do not push one political party over another within their stores or on the outside of their buildings.

Given my belief that business should be business and keep politics out of business, one can only wonder why any business would want to take their business and have it become a billboard for a political party. Given this belief of mine, I was shocked to see that the owners of Scoops, a local ice cream shop on Route 93 in downtown Polson has become a billboard for the Republican party. I cannot, for the life of me, understand how a business owner could run the risk, with today’s business challenges, to alienate 50 percent of potential customers, which is what this owner has done.

Without taking sides on the political spectrum, I just cannot understand how anyone could be so willing to cut their business options in half for the sake of making a political statement. So, if one has a different political belief, fortunately, there are three other ice cream shops in Polson to support, and this is true no matter what the owners of the other three shops have. At least they are not forcing their views on their patrons.
