Editor,

This is in response to a letter to the editor, “A nation is its people,” sent in by Geraldine Roullier. She, like thousands of tribal members, wants a 100-percent payout of the $150 million windfall that was awarded to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

What I would like to know is why the CSKT Tribal Council is spending millions of dollars every year buying up land — land that sits idle once bought? Why aren’t these millions being spent to provide opportunity, jobs, housing and social services to the thousands of members living in poverty here? What is the purpose of buying all this land?

The other thing I would like to ask tribal members is to ask for an audit of the CSKT that will show how much money has come into the CSKT’s hands and to determine where all of this money has gone.

Is there misuse, fraud and wasteful spending going on? I’m not accusing, just asking the question. Have the tribes ever been audited? I’d like to hear some feedback on this.
