Editor,

This past week I participated in my brother-in-law’s memorial service at the Terrace Lake Community church in Ronan. John Corum was a World War II Navy veteran. His body was buried at Ronan’s Mountain View Cemetery with full military honors. Thank you, honor guard. You do such a splendid ceremony in honoring our passing veterans.

Over the course of my adult lifetime, 60-plus years, I have endeavored to provide spiritual counsel and sympathetic support to many families as they have grieved the loss of a loved one. Through it all, I’ve discovered that those who have a personal relationship with Jesus (John 14:15-21 among others), have a confidence that being absent from their earthly body means being present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8); those folks find death and dying far less devastating than those who do not have such a personal relationship with the Savior. Do they sorrow at the passing of a loved one; absolutely. But sorrow is tempered with the hope that they find in the Bible (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) regarding the resurrection of the dead and life in heaven with those loved ones who have already died. Jesus promises a marvelous reunion with family members who have gone on to heaven before them; together they will celebrate and enjoy eternal life with Jesus forever.

People have often asked, “Is it possible to know for sure we’re going to heaven when we die?” According to the Bible, it is. “I write these words to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13).
