Editor,

Senator Max Baucus sent out an email saying why he voted against increasing the scope of gun registration. He said “...And that is why I will oppose anything that infringes on the Second Amendment rights of responsible, law-abiding Montanans.”

My question is, where does the Second Amendment restrict itself to responsible, law-abiding citizens? It does not.

Yet we as a people mostly agree that there are some citizens who should not carry arms — violent criminals on probation and the diagnosed severely mentally ill are two examples. Do we hear the NRA leadership or other defenders of the Second Amendment fighting to overturn infringement of these peoples’ right to bear arms? I know I haven’t heard that, but I do hear the responsible, law-abiding part a lot. So it seems to me that the real question is not “Is the Second Amendment untouchable?” but rather, “How can we least intrude upon it while at the same time making an effort to offer our citizens some escape from an unnecessary risk of personal harm?”

In my opinion, extending the venues where gun registration is required meets this effort. I believe the Senator is pandering for votes for his reelection rather than truly concerned with the protection of Second Amendment rights for Montana’s citizens.
