Editor,

It was decided to move Ronan down to Class B status. I am in favor of staying Class A due mostly to the fact that our schools seem to be growing and we will have to go back to A. I felt that the inconsistency would be detrimental to the kids. Everyone felt our athletes would be more competitive in B. I don’t feel this is the case and B competition will still be very hard, if not harder in some sports. However, the school board has made their decision and we as parents need to stand behind them. I don’t want people to be disappointed and start asking for coaches to be fired if we don’t win as a B school. We have good coaches, let them do their jobs and we as parents should be along the sidelines cheering our kids on. Encourage your athletes that this is not degrading, and the competition in B will be very hard.

This change is not going to make the competition any easier. My 13-year-old daughter said to me last night that it will not be as easy as everyone thinks but it will be fun to play against new schools for a couple years and then come back into A with a new attitude and more diverse playing experience.

This will not be an easy change, and I still feel the school board is shortsighted in this decision. In one vote they say we are too small to be in A but in the next vote they say our elementary schools are so overcrowded we need to move fifth grade into the middle school. We will have to go back to A anyway, in two years? In four years? Who knows, but it will happen. The decision, however, is made and we need to support our kids and our school board and encourage each other to keep our kids here and go into this with the attitude that we will be getting a more diverse playing experience. Know that we have good coaches and don’t blame them if we don’t win everything. Let’s take what we learn from competing in B and use it when we do move up to A again.
