Editor,

With Election Day drawing near, the citizens of House District 12 are fortunate to have two quality men vying to represent us in Helena. These men, anyone would be glad to have as a neighbor. Both have contributed unselfishly to our communities for many years.

While these are both good men, John Fleming and Dan Salomon have vastly different views as to the role of government in our lives. We will be selecting a person to represent our views in the state legislature. Dan Salomon is the man who I feel most closely share the views that many in Mission Valley hold dear. It is the role of government to serve the citizens, not the other way around. The recent growth in state government (over 1,000 new state employees in the past 6 years) is not sustainable and is draining the financial resources.

The report card is in for Mr. Fleming and it shows some alarming trends. On issues of environmental regulation, he scores in the 90 to 96 percentile range in representing the extreme environmental views of groups like the Northern Plains Resource Council, The Montana Environmental Center and the Montana Conservation Voters. On hunting and fishing issues he received a grade of “D” from the Montana Shooting Sports and the NRA and 0 percent from the Montanans for Multiple Use. When it comes to jobs and business, John received a 100 percent from labor unions but only a 44 percent from the Montana Chamber of Commerce.

While no legislator can be expected to be in agreement with everyone they represent all of the time, there should be a balance that is lacking with our current representation and it is tie for a change. That change is Dan Salomon.

Please take some tie to compare the candidates and let your voice be heard on Nov. 2.
