Editor,

Just an answer to John Cummings’ comments in the Valley Journal on Feb. 5 concerning my open letter to Republicans letter of Jan. 29 which was entitled “Stop blaming, start solving.”

The message in my letter was to outline three things that, in my opinion, the Republicans should do if they want to connect well with the American public and have a chance at making inroads toward the office of President of the United States.

A portion of John’s letter dealt with my assertion that the Republicans should stop bringing up the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on our mission in Benghazi, Libya as a way of attacking Hillary Clinton because she would make mincemeat out of anyone seriously going after her for the Benghazi attack.

The two former SEALS who were killed in the Benghazi attack were good friends of John’s son who recently retired after a 20-year career as a Navy SEAL. Wow — I can see why any mention of the Benghazi attack, especially in the context I was addressing, could cause high emotion with Mr. Cummings. I truly am very sorry for any impression I may have conveyed which would cast anything but the greatest respect and admiration I have and have always had for our Navy SEALS.

The Benghazi attack was horrible. We had intelligence failures on this, and we will probably have more. Look at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Look at the Twin Towers 60 years later.  No one person can truly be held responsible for these horrible attacks upon America when an entire national system of intelligence and security is involved and at fault.

And we surely honor and support those men and women who sacrifice in so many ways in defending America and dedicating their lives for our freedoms and security.

So often the ugly function of American politics seems to ignore the plaintive calls “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
