POLSON – Sandpiper member Heather Holmes will display a multi-media collection of Native American inspired art from art classes she taught with Cherry Valley and Linderman Elementary students including ledger art, totems, masks, mandalas, clay pots and sculptures. Co-op to host Spring Green 2015

Fort Connah Trading Post comes to life
ST.IGNATIUS – On Saturday and Sunday May 9-10, (Mother’s Day weekend), the Fort Connah Restoration Society will host an open house and rendezvous which depicts life during the fur trading era of Montana. This is a great opportunity to bring Mom to see the 1846 historic Hudson’s Bay Fort Connah Trading Post come to life. This event is free and includes demonstrations of time-era activities, crafts and kids games. Learn about huckleberries
PABLO — Come learn about huckleberries on May 9 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the late Louie Caye Building at Salish Kootenai College. Everyone is invited (especially youth), entry is free, and pizza will be served. Huckleberries are important both culturally and for food security. We’ll start with a talk about why we are starting this project, how huckleberries grow throughout the season, and potential impacts to huckleberries as the climate changes. If you think you might be willing to get more involved and help us research climate change impacts to huckleberries or just want to learn some research skills, after lunch we will train people how to set up trail cameras, collect data on pomology, navigate with GPS units and a compass. Mother’s Day luncheon planned

Griz coaches, staff to play in Ronan GSA tourney
RONAN — University of Montana coaches and staff will again participate in the annual Tana Bockman Memorial Golf for the Griz Tournament on Friday, May 15. The event will be held on the Mission Mountain Golf Course in Ronan. The four-person, 18-hole, co-ed scramble will tee off with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.
A pig roast barbecue and prize presentations will take place at 4 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes.
All proceeds from the tournament go to scholarships for U of M Grizzly student athletes. The Mission Mountain Chapter of the University of Montana Scholarship Association sponsors this event.

Shred Day is set

Free youth hoops clinic planned
LAKE COUNTY — A free youth basketball clinic with guest coaches from The Hoop coaching clinic will take place Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Hosted by Salish Kootenai College, the clinic will be held at Two Eagle River School for girls in fifth through eighth grade and at Polson Middle School for boys in fourth through sixth grade. Yellow Bay Cherry Blossom Festival Seeks Vendors
YELLOW BAY – The 12th annual Yellow Bay Cherry Blossom Festival will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Yellow Bay Community Clubhouse located on Highway 35 at mile-marker 18. Arts and crafts vendors selling locally produced items are encouraged to apply now for a 10’ x 10’ outdoor space; cost is $15. Ride bikes for family fun

IGNATIUS — The United Methodist Church will hold a bike rodeo, bike maintenance and exchange workshop on May 17 starting at 3:30 p.m. We will have fun with a safety obstacle course for the kids, a talk about maintenance issues by Nathan Cantlon, (a local bike repairperson and mechanical engineer). We have five bikes for an exchange if your child needs to exchange up for a larger size. We have one newer bike to give as a prize. The day will end with a free supper. Guest entertains on Heritage Day
ARLEE — Jerrikson “J-Stylez” Hosteen, a motivational guest speaker, dubbed “the first American Indian basketball entertainer in the world” will be at the American Indian Cultural Heritage Day on May 21 at Arlee School. J-Stylez, a Dine Native from Sawmill, Arizona, incorporates numerous juggling, spinning and dribbling basketball tricks into his program.
Students will have the opportunity to engage in many cultural activities throughout the day including beading pouches, native games, setting up a teepee and native plant education.

Qi Gong taught at Co-op

Energy expert addresses tax issues
POLSON — Brian Lipscomb, CEO, Energy Keepers, will talk about the Tribe’s purchase of Kerr Dam, the marketing of electricity, and how it may affect the tax base of Lake County and Polson School District. With Tribal ownership $978,179 will be removed from Lake County property taxes of which $619,847 supports the local schools where about 30 percent of the students are Native American. So far the Tribe has been circumspect about what they plan to do about the taxation issue. Energy Keepers has contracted with an out of state company to market their energy. As this Tribal owned energy moves across interstate transmission lines will it be subject to taxation as is other energy is a question that Lipscomb might address at noon at the Friday, May 22 meeting. Lake County Pachyderm meetings take place at the Polson Rural Fire Department building near the Fairgrounds at noon. Everyone is invited to attend.
