Editor,

Today, as I was walking the Polson High School track, I got to thinking. Here is this beautiful building, great track and football field. How things have changed since 65 years ago, growing up near a town in Wisconsin with a 5,000 population. My high school had a custodian, a principal and his secretary; a lunch room where I ate food from my bag lunch. We had a scraggly football field.

My parents stayed together. The single-parent syndrome is almost accepted as normal these days. If we considered college we never thought about having to spend years paying off a student loan. As a farm boy, sex was making sure the bull did his thing to the cow. Drug was only a word I used when yelling: “Hey, let’s go to Arnold’s Drug Store for a soda.”

I asked myself: Are kids getting a better education today? How about family life? Our school did not have any psychologists on staff. Families are breaking apart in America today. Taxes are high; many wages are low. Middle class financial problems are becoming critical. Upper class financial gains are becoming huge and out of proportion.

Climate changes are having dramatic effects upon the severity of weather-related catastrophes. The U.S. seems to get in the middle of every world controversy. Our nation is losing out in the world’s productivity equation. Our diversity is becoming a weakness instead of a strength. Our infrastructure needs immediate attention. We have state governors either being indicted for breaking laws or being investigated for wrongdoing, all in the name of greed and big money interests and control. Our legislative branch of government is in shambles.

My take on all this? If anyone thinks that ISIS is a real threat to the American way of life, I say to America: “Look deeper. Look within. Look honestly. The real threat to the American way of life is right here at home.”
