Editor,
In October, the Ronan, Pablo and Polson Post Offices will be promoting sales of the Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp. The price for a pane of 20 Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamps is $12 with $2.20 of the purchase price sent to provide funds for research.
The first semi-postal stamp in U.S. history, the Breast Cancer Research stamp was issued at the White House on July 29, 1998 and features artwork of a mythical “goddess of the hunt” by Whitney Sherman of Baltimore, Maryland. Sales of the Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp have raised more than $78 million in voluntary contributions for breast cancer research since July 1998, and sales of the stamp have been extended until December 31, 2015.
A semi-postal stamp is a postage stamp issued to raise money and is sold over and above the cost of postage. Seventy percent of the net amount raised from its sales goes to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent goes to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense.
We encourage everyone to visit their local post office in October (and year-round) to support the fight for breast cancer research. The stamps may also be purchased by phone, 800-STAMP-24 (800-782-6724), or online by going to www.usps.com and clicking on the link “buy stamps and shop.”
