Editor,

The County Commissioners and the Association of County Clerks and Recorders are trying to get the Legislature to pass SB 305 to allow us to do the Special Federal Election by Mail Ballot. As Lake County Election Administrator, I know county election budgets took a big hit last fall when we had to reprint all of our ballots due to the death of a candidate. SB305 did pass out of the Senate but now is in the House where it’s meeting opposition. Lake County alone will save almost $40,000 if we can do it by mail and we’ll have a much bigger voter turnout.

With the election being right before Memorial Day weekend, not to mention high school graduations, weddings and vacations, voting at the polls for one race in a special election will be the last thing on people’s minds.

A lot of people already think it’s going to be done by mail so we need to let the voters know they need to talk to their representatives as soon as possible. If you need help finding your local representative’s contact information please contact the Election Office at 406-883-7268.
