Editor,

So it was written, so it is so.

Once upon a time an emperor was told by weavers they could create so special a suit he could wear it and would be the envy of everyone. And, of course it was the greatest thing he could put on and only special people would be able to see how great it was. Stupid people could not; had this story been written today instead of in 1837, likely political affiliation, race, ethnicity and religious conviction groups would also be included with “stupid.”

As the story then and now goes, none of his followers would admit they knew no such suit was possible to forever hide the fact nothing of substance was there. Fear of being fired, or worse, labeled, kept them from saying to friends what they knew to be true. Hence the deceit spread and was protected throughout the land, followers fell in line and ignored the real reality that was growing more obvious even to them, day by day.

And one day it happened. While again showing off in his magnificent style, a small child lacking learned ignorance only could see the truth and called out the emperor’s nakedness. Despite fake news relaying this information across the kingdom, too much blindness and sameness had overtaken the engrained and older people so they simply had the boy deported.

The kingdom lived happily ever after for a brief time. Yet history, not learned by the emperor and the people, was repeated, and it and they were replaced by a more astute and caring society.

Election, May 25 — choose wisely.
